FRITH BARN, PLUCKLEY

Frith Barn is located outside of Pluckley in Kent. It was converted initially for residential use in the ‘90s and had not been substantially altered since that time.

We were approached by our client to extend the existing property to allow more living space and to also respond to the garden better.

Our initial thoughts were to design a modern take on the barn, hinting at the original form and materials but introducing good levels of glazing at the rear and this formed the basis of the scheme that is now complete today.

The extension, due to its height, was sunken into the ground by approximately one metre to ensure that it remained subservient to the main dwelling, and linked to its host via a frameless glass link. A cantilevered mezzanine study was designed over the kitchen which would take advantage of the far reaching views across the Kent countryside from a higher vantage point.

Kent Design Studio took the project from Planning approval through to the finished article, also managing the tender and build process on site.
